This course considers the principles of sustainable development in the global and island contexts. Course participants are expected to enrich the course by linking what they learn to their backgrounds. The course assesses and rethinks the meaning of sustainable development. It considers the history of sustainable development thought, the part played by environmental activism and grass roots movements and the shift of sustainable development into mainstream thinking. It deals with the problems and prospects of creating sustainable societies. It discusses the economics of sustainable development, the role of green and blue economics and the social costs of environmental degradation. It considers ideas of individual and corporate legal responsibility for sustainable development. The course concludes by offering possible solutions to problems of food production, environmental degradation, industrialisation, energy use and population growth.
